There are 22 species, the various representatives of the genus have a huge distribution area. The species are found in northern Africa and large parts of Europe, Asia and the Middle East.[3] Until recently, the green frogs were considered to belong to the genus Rana, just like the brown frog (Rana temporaria). According to recent insights, based on DNA research, the green frogs are now separated into the genus Pelophylax, which only includes the more closely related species.
