A knight (a word derived from rider) was a mounted and armored soldier (rider) in the Middle Ages. They were often in the service of a nobleman. A knight's equipment consisted at least of a warhorse, sword, shield and lance. In addition, a knight wore protective clothing such as a coat of mail, helmet and protective pieces of hard leather over the arms and legs. Plate armor did not come into use until the late Middle Ages.
