Description
The first fossil of Giganotosaurus was found in 1987. The genus was given its name in 1995, meaning "Large saurian of the South", when the type species Giganotosaurus carolinii was designated. At his nomination, the animal was presented as being larger than Tyrannosaurus, which until then was considered the largest land predator of all time. Among the known specimens of Tyrannosaurus, some are longer than the main fossil found of Giganotosaurus, but on average they are shorter. Even bigger than these two species, however, is Spinosaurus, which was discovered in 1912.
