Papo Dinosaurs Stegosaurus 55079

Stegosaurus is a genus of ornithian dinosaurs. The genus belongs to the Stegosauria, a group of herbivores that reached its peak in the Jurassic. Stegosaurus lived 150 million years ago during the late Jurassic in North America and, at 30 feet (9 m) in length, is the largest known stegosaur.

Description

The first fossil of Stegosaurus was discovered in 1877. The genus was given its name in that year by Marsh, which means "daksaur". Further fossils of Stegosaurus were later found. They were often seen as separate species, even if their skeleton was little different. In total, fourteen species have been named within the genus. Which types of these are valid is very controversial. None were considered valid by all scientists around 2010, not even the then type species Stegosaurus armatus. A new type species was therefore designated in 2013: Stegosaurus stenops.
