Description
The first fossils of Therizinosaurus, a pair of giant claws, were found in 1948. The type species was given its name in 1954, Therizinosaurus cheloniformis, meaning "tortoise-shaped reaper saurian". It was thought that it was an animal that resembled a sea turtle and mowed seaweed with its claws. Only after new finds in the 1970s did scientists understand that it was, in fact, a theropod dinosaur. Even then people didn't really know what the animal looked like; this only became clear in the 1990s after previously discovered species were recognized as relatives. These enable us to form a picture of Therizinosaurus, of which very few remains have yet been discovered.
