Description
Mammoths were eaten by humans and their skin and fur were used for clothing and blankets. Mammoths probably went extinct not because they were hunted, but because of climate change. At the end of the last ice age it became warmer and more marshy and there was less and less grass. The mammoth had too little to eat. The mammoth lived from about 2.3 million years ago to about 4000 years ago. The different species lived in Europe, Asia and North America. Those continents looked different back then. It was very cold at that time. Much of the land was covered in a thick layer of ice. The mammoth did not live on the ice, but on the plains next to it. These are called steppes. Due to the severe cold, no trees grew. The mammoth ate only grass and plants; an estimated 180 kilos per day!
