Description
Oviraptor is only known from a single incomplete skeleton. As a result, the exact appearance of the animal is uncertain. In fact, most illustrations of Oviraptor show Citipati or another related species whose fossils used to be confused with those of Oviraptor. Oviraptor looked a lot like a bird. He was also closely related to the birds. It was a rather small, one and a half meters long, warm-blooded animal with plumage. His hands were quite large but he walked on his hind legs. It had a short toothless head with a beak. What he ate with it is not certain. Because the fossil was found on a nest, it was first thought that it scavenged eggs, hence the name meaning "egg thief". It was later understood that the nest must have been Oviraptor's own eggs. Instead of eggs, the staple diet may have been plants or shellfish
