Description
Smilodon lived in North, Central and South America. They lived on grassland and in not too dense forests. The bones of many specimens have been found in the tar pits of La Brea, so that quite a lot is known about them. Homotherium latidens, living in Europe, is also called saber-toothed tiger. This species is a member of the same subfamily but is placed in a different genus group (Homotheriini). Smilodon belonged to a group of felines called the saber-toothed cats (Machairodontinae). The genus descended from Paramachairodus (13 to 2 million years ago). This genus is also usually counted among the saber-toothed tigers. Smilodon was not closely related to tigers and is not ancestral to any living big cat species. It is still unclear what caused Smilodon to become extinct.
