Description
Fossils of Gorgosaurus were excavated from the mid-nineteenth century, but they consisted only of teeth and bone fragments. In 1913 a number of almost complete skeletons were found in Canada. In 1914 the genus got its name, meaning "fierce saurian", when the type species Gorgosaurus libratus was named. Later, four more species were named within the genus, but it is now understood that these are juveniles of G. libratus or completely different dinosaurs. Gorgosaurus is very similar to the later Albertosaurus sarcophagus, which is why some scientists see it as a species of Albertosaurus: A.libratus. Another dozen skeletons of Gorgosaurus have been found in the past century, giving scientists a good idea of its build.
