Description
The history of the Poitou donkey goes back to Roman times. The studbook was created in 1884. Nowadays, the Poitou donkey has also become a rare breed in its native France. In 1977, there were only 44 Poitou donkeys left worldwide. Thanks to the timely intervention of breeders, there were already 400 worldwide in 2004. There are two types of studbooks: the first is "livre A", especially for pure Poitou donkeys. To be registered with Livre A, the donkey must have parents who both come from Livre A. "Livre B" is intended for animals carrying a lower concentration of Poitou blood. To be registered as a donkey, one of the parents must be an animal from Livre A and the other parent an animal from Livre B or unknown. In this way, it is hoped that the pure Poitou donkey will eventually be bred back.
