Papo Dinosaurs Iguanodon 55071

Iguanodon was one of the very first dinosaurs discovered in England in the early nineteenth century by Gideon Mantell and was given its name in 1825, which means something like "iguana tooth". When the term Dinosauria was coined by Richard Owen in 1842, Iguanodon was one of the first three dinosaurs recognized by him. In 1829 the first species of the genus was named: Iguanodon anglicus. Twenty-four other species would follow after that. Most of these are now understood to be very different dinosaurs or fossils that are too poorly preserved to identify the exact animal. In fact, this also applies to I. anglicus, where only some teeth belong with certainty. That is why in 2000 a Belgian species was designated as the official type species of the genus: Iguanodon bernissartenis Boulenger, 1881. In Belgium, one of the richest dinosaur sites in the world was found in 1878 in a coal mine in Bernissart, from which about thirty almost complete still related recumbent iguanodon skeletons was revealed. These were prepared by Louis Dollo and are now exhibited in Brussels.
