Description
In 1991, during a 1990 expedition to Antarctica, geologist David Elliot found the remains of an unknown theropod on Mount Kirkpatrick, near the Beardmore Glacier. The fossils were removed from the frozen soil layers with great difficulty. It soon became clear that the animal must have had a distinctive "crest" and it was nicknamed "Elvisaurus" after Elvis Presley. In 1993, paleontologist William Hammer, together with William Hickerson, named and described the type species Cryolophosaurus ellioti. The genus name is derived from the Ancient Greek κρύος, kryos, "glacial cold", a reference to the current cold that characterizes Antarctica, and λόφος (lophos) or λόφη (lophè), "comb". The species name honors Elliot.
