Description
In the spring of 1940, John Willis Stovall was notified that large bones had been found on Herman Arnold's farm in Atoka County. He investigated this in April of that year together with Charles Newton Gould, the former director of the Oklahoma Geological Survey. He had the bones excavated as part of a job creation project. A kilometer further east, a second skeleton was discovered on the land of farmer W.P. Cochran. This was excavated in 1941. In 1947 Wann Langston Jr. wrote a thesis about it, in which he named the animal Acrocanthus atokensis. This is an invalid nomen ex dissertatione. The type species Acrocanthosaurus atokensis was named and described in 1950 by Stovall and Langston. The genus name means "tall thorn reptile" from Ancient Greek ἄκρος, akros, "on top", and ἄκανθα, akantha, "thorn". The species name refers to the town of Atoka.
