Description
All species were carnivorous land dwellers that lived in the Early Permian (290 to 270 million years ago). Fossils are known from the United States, Canada and Germany.[1] Due to climate change, the habitat of Dimetrodon changed to such an extent that the genus became extinct. Several Dimetrodon have been described, which have a similar physique. Dimetrodon grew to about two to three meters in length and had a stocky, lizard-like body with small legs. A characteristic feature of Dimetrodon was the large, upright dorsal sail, which was made of skin and reinforced with long, rib-like protrusions of the vertebral column. The scientific name Dimetrodon refers to the teeth of the animals and is Greek for two (di) sizes of teeth (metrodon).
