Description
Fossil remains were discovered in 1912 and named Spinosaurus aegyptiacus in 1915. Only part of the skeleton is known, so it is not possible to determine exactly what this species looked like. It is clear that the skull resembled that of a crocodile and was suitable for gripping smaller prey firmly. On the back was a huge backsail. Scientists disagree on what that sail was for, whether Spinosaurus ate primarily fish or land animals, and how tall it could grow. Modern estimates of its length are between fourteen and eighteen meters.
