Jumping competitions can take place both indoors and outdoors. The course, i.e. the road that the combination must travel, is provided with obstacles of different shape, height, width and mutual distance. The number of obstacles can vary and depends on the type of competition. Because several jumps can be combined into one obstacle, the number of obstacles is usually lower than the number of jumps. The evaluation is done by means of penalty points, which are awarded for exceeding time and jumping faults.
